EDM Drawing Challenge # 60 Draw an automobile or part of one.

sketching the rusted out carOn one of our Sunday walks we discovered this rusted out old car while exploring the paths up near Scrivener Dam. It is a sad old thing.

I decided it was a suitable candidate for the EDM drawing challenge # 60 Draw an automobile or part of one.

The day was windy and bit uncomfortable but I pulled out my fishermans stool, sat down and spent about 20-30 minutes drawing it. I enjoyed sketching it. I would like to return again when the weather is a bit nicer, to do some detailed sections or draw it from different angles because the rusted textures are simply wonderful. There are also lots of different colours in that rusted wreck and loads of interesting positive and negative shapes.

I have no idea how it got there or what the story is behind it but I am sure it has one.

My drawing is done in my current sketchbook/journal which is a Canson. I used Derwent Graphitints pencils, and Faber Castell Pitt pens.

Above is a photo of the car and below I have my sketch.

EDM drawing challenge #100 Draw or Paint a Landscape

pencil swatch test  I purchased a set of Derwent graphitint pencils and the first thing I did was a colour swatch test in my journal. Derwent Graphitints are are a water soluble graphite pencil with just a smidgen of colour. If you add water them (as I did with the disk like patches on the left) the colour they produce is richer but they are proving to be ideal for the muted colours of the Australian bush.

The following weekend you would have found me on the path to Scrivener Dam which from that viewpoint you can clearly see Black Mountain Tower. Yes the name sounds ominous but it is really a quite mundane telecommunications tower. So it was the perfect opportunity to tackle EDM drawing challenge 100 – Draw or Paint a Landscape.

I always have mixed feeling when I do a drawing and then add text above, below or around it as often it interferes with the image – but then I tell myself it is journal for goodness sake and just not that important. I see people taking the whole drawing thing very seriously. I guess I feel it doesn’t have to be as really it the process of looking that I enjoy and for me makes the moment. What is actually recorded is often not important.

Anyway no need for rant. Life has been busy here and I have been scratching to find time for drawing and scratching even more to find time to blog about it! But here I am playing catch up. I will photograph a few more drawings I have done and share them over the next few days.
