Everyday Matters drawing challenge number 294

EDM # 294 asks participants to “Draw something that makes you smile”. We have had these wooden christmas tree decorations for nearly 20 years.

EDM challenge drawingEvery year I take a childish delight in hanging them on the tree so I decided to draw them a bit like a children’s book illustration.

EDM challenge drawingAs you can see I am getting back to the swing of things. I have set a goal this year to keep a regular habit of drawing or some form of image making such as working in my visual journal. I hope to share the results of my effort here.

Anyway I hope people enjoy this it is watercolour on cartridge paper in a new A4 size Canson sketchbook.

oooo…..nice! I am liking the way that cartridge paper takes watercolor! Do you have a more specific title to the canson sketchbook? I had one that didn’t take the color very well….turned everything sort of gray.

Wonderful sketches and memories! Happy New Year.

Raena all I can tell you is that is it is Canson 96gsm 80 sheet A4 sketch book which is hard bound with a black cover. I purchased it in our local art supplies shop here in Canberra. It is part of a chain called Eckersley’s I don’t particularly like them as an art store but it is all that is here.

  2. These are adorable. I live the color in them. As Raena said, the cartridge paper also takes to color beautifully.

    Hi, Sharon~
I do not draw, nor do I paint. I admire the talent of others’. That is about all I do. Nor do I usually check out EDM, but I followed your link today, and it is like you gave me a “hint” that maybe I could do something similar. I certainly can’t manage watercoloring that would look like yours, but maybe even a simple drawing and colored pencils. Your portrayal of these simple Christmas ornaments is lovely. I just wanted to tell you that, and that you seem to have inspired me.
    Many blessings in 2014~

Thanks Judi that is a lovely comment to open and read. Everyone starts somewhere and drawing makes you see the world in a particular way. It enriches your life as a result so I can only encourage you – good luck and enjoy your journey!

Hi Sharon, these are delightful little pieces and I hope you won’t be offended when I say I think your drawings have improved amazingly since you started this project. I love your decorations too; we have some similar ones, all wood in red and green. Very cute.

What happened to Pepe’s ART store in Phillip? I know it’s 10 years since we left but I thought he would stay forever, but obviously not. Did Eckersleys take him over? I agree with you on that score, I would prefer to deal with a local business and to my great delight we have a new art supply shop right here now.

Hi Chris I take absolutely no offence at all as the reason I am doing it is to improve! I know I am very rusty in the drawing department and enjoying getting back to observing and drawing

Pepe sold the shop to Eckersleys and they filled half the floor with scrap booking and craft stuff. It is not the same at all and I miss the art store Pepe ran – he still has a designer stationary store but not an art store.

These are really, really cute! A very good idea for the topic. I have never heard of cartridge paper, but there are some real nice effects here.

Thanks Dan – I ma not sure what cartridge paper is called in the states but the big art chains sell Canson sketchbooks as I have seen them there.
