AJW Challenge “An animal”

Drawing of a water dragonThese water dragon lizards live under the bridge in the green belt at the end of our street. Some days they will sit still for hours sunning themselves on a rock. In the middle of summer on hot days they move a lot more. Not exactly frolicking but definitely active as it was nearly 35 today. So I worked from a photo as the prompt for Day 4 of the AJW challenge is “an animal”.  I used watercolour, my lamy pen, and pitt pens in a Strathmore mixed media journal

The AJW Sketchbook challenge run by Palma of A Creative Journey  proposes a daily prompt throughout January which is shared in the Artist Journal Workshop Facebook group

This is also prompt 44 off the  EDM challenge list  which reads draw an animal , a pet or from the zoo. The Every Day Matters drawing challenge has  an active Facebook page.

EDM 44 – Draw an animal

EDM 44 Drawing of PelicanI have discovered I forgot to share this! Everyday Matters drawing challenge number #44 reads  Draw an animal – a pet, a zoo animal, or a stuffed one and this is it! I did it the day we went for fish and chips. I started it while there and managed to get most of it done but completed it working from a photo when home as the bird wandered off!

I used watercolours, watercolour pencils, and pitt pens. Click on the image for a larger view.

After my last post moaning and groaning about battling time to try and establish a routine of drawing. I will  keep this post simple and I will get off the computer and go do some more!

Everyday Matters Drawing Challenge 256

Everyday matters drawing 256Boy I am being tardy with my blog posts here but here I am big stupid grin on my face with another drawing from the Every Day Drawing challenge list. Number 256 says draw something bubbly. Well… this did bubble at one stage

This is the mate to the coffee pot (EDM 249) –  a very battered kettle. It was used on wood stove for years and years. My father would say to me lets have a cuppa and it would go on the stove and he would poke and prod the fire into life while I stood and warmed my back. If it was summer we had an old Meters Kooka stove ( Aussies will know what I mean) outside. We cooked out there all summer in the cool of evening sitting out on the back verandah, as it was too hot to cook inside. Now of course he has electricity now but when I was young many areas of rural Australia had to generate their own power or go without.  Anyway those are the memories associated with this battered old thing. It made many cups of tea.

EDM 256 on my deskHere it is perched being a good model as you see it has very bent handle. I drew it using Faber Castell Pitt pens and watercolour paint and Derwent watercolour pencils. I sprinkled salt into wet watercolour to get the texture.

Everyday matters drawing challenge 249

Drawing 249

I am swinging by to share another drawing challenge photo.  This is EDM drawing challenge 249 which prompts us to draw a coffee pot. This is an old copper pot my father had. The pot is no longer functional as the tin lining is damaged and there are a number of dents in it now. Click the image and you see a larger version.

I used Faber Castell Pitt pens, watercolour paint and Derwent watercolour pencils to do the exercise .

item on deskThese exercises to draw items on a list of prompts do prevent me wandering about the place looking for something to draw. I just find something, plonk it down on my work table and get on with it. The main thing for me is to practice draw from life.  Its’ a bit like a musician doing scales – drawing from life regularly helps keep my eye in. It does not matter what it is I draw. The drawing does not have to have any deep and meaningful message. The object can be part of my life but that is it.
